Prague is the capital and the largest city in the Czech Republic and has many nicknames – ‘The city of Spires’ the mother of cities and the golden city.  It is beautifully situated on the River Vltava in central Bohemia and has been the cultural, as well as the economic centre of the Czech state for more than 1100 years. Since 1992 the historic centre of Prague which is quite extensive has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The area on which Prague was founded dates back form the Paleolithic age.  Around 200 BC the Celts had a settlement in the South called Zavist.  In later years the city became the seat of the dukes and the kings of Bohemia.  It was under  the Emperor Otto II that the city became a Bishopric in 973.  It was also an important trading area where merchants from all over Europe settled, including many Jews as chronicles by the Jewish merchant Ibrahim ibn Ya’qub. The Old New Synagogue of 1270 still stands. During the 14th Century the city flourished under the King of Bohemia and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. It was he who ordered the building of the New Town adjacent to the Old Town. There were many buildings erected to commemorate his reign – the Charles Bridge, St Vitus Catherdral, the oldest Gothic cathedral in Central Europe and stands inside the Castle. At that time Prague was the third largest city in Europe.
