Mittersill -  Austria

for an Activity Experience

The Mittersill Picture Gallery

Mittersill lies approximately 25km to the west of Zell am See, 30km to the south of Kitzbühel and 27km east from the start of the Salzach valley in Krimml. Mittersill straddles the Salzach river and one of its tributaries; the Felber. The town is bordered on the south by the Hohe Tauern mountain range, and to the north by the Kitzbühel Alps. It has traffic links running east to west and well as north to south. The road tunnel, Felbertauern runs southerly through the Hohe Tauern at a height of c.1630m, providing a connection with Lienz in East Tyrol. To the north lies the mountain pass Pass Thurn at a height of 1274m providing a connection with Kitzbühel and Tyrol.

"Schloss Mittersill is a beautiful building with great hospitality.  If you crave a place that feels like a favorite shoe with heart connected to history then this beats any five star hotel. There are many places to sit in privacy or with good friends to visit, the food is well prepared and there’s plenty of it, and the history and life that fills each unique room makes the whole atmosphere pleasant and meaningful. Austria is relaxed and the local town is easy to navigate. The local mountains offer many different options for easy recreation or high adventure. What a great combination of nature, history and personal wellness".  - Guest Review

During our time at Schloss Mittersill we will be enjoying all different grades of hiking and challenging  treks to some of the most beautiful and  walks in this part of Europe. These will include the highest waterfalls in Europe the Krimml Falls Hohe Tauren National Park just down the road from where we are staying.

Refer proposed itinerary below. This event is being run in-conjunction with the Christian Rambling Club

The history of Schloss Mittersill over the centuries has been shaped by the rise and fall of political powers and the general currents of change within society. It is our belief that these developments were, and are, not random, nor simply the result of human endeavour; rather, it is God who stands behind and acts within the historical process to bring about his will and purposes. The first castle on the Schloss’ present site was built around 1150 by the Grafen von Lechsgemünd family, nobles from Bavaria who were the feudal lords of the Pinzgau, the valley and region in which Mittersill is situated. The Pinzgau came into the possession of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg in 1228. (As the name implies, the Prince-Archbishop was both head of state and head of the church.) Until 1803, when the church lost secular power, the archbishops appointed a “Protector of the Pinzgau” to act as governor and judge for the region. During the “Austrian Period” (1816-1849), the Protector continued to live at the Schloss

Day 1

A Challenging Hike

The walk up to Krimml Falls is an outstanding walk where the falls are the highest in Europe. It is a relatively steep walk. There is a restaurant on the way up – good for stopping either for coffee or lunch – depending on what time we get there. Various vantage points for taking photos are dotted strategically along the paved path. The scenery is good all the way up, but the absolute best thing is when you get to the very top – past the falls. At this point, you are in the high meadow – it’s quite magical – almost like being ‘somewhere over the rainbow’ this is the Hohetauern National Park. Up there, you will encounter a couple of mountain huts where we can have a coffee, or choose from their lunch menus. This a full day walk, to get the absolute most out of it. Admission is about €2 per person – this helps to maintain the paths.

Day 3

PiHapper a very strenuous walk is, which is the highest mountain in this area. If we go to the very top, there is a cross up there – a good photo opportunity.

Not far from the top you have a ladder to climb, and there are steel ropes to hang on to, to save yourself falling.

This walk is grueling – and not for the faint-hearted!
