Good news:  I’m set apart for God!

Romans  6 1-7 : 25

 

 

Good news:

 

Two main ideas in this section:

 

1.  I’m free (6:1-7:6) - no need to go on sinning

 

a) I’m dead to sin: I belong to God (6:1-14)

              i) continuing to sin is incompatible with my new life (1,

             ii) Baptism illustrates the point (4)

            iii) Applied in verses 5-14

                        - dead to sin (6,7,11,12,13)

                        - alive to Christ (8,11,14)

 

b) I’m freed from sin: I can serve God (6:15-23)

               i) I was a slave to sin (16, 17, 19)

                        - and I reaped death (21,23)

              ii) I am a slave to God (16b, 18b, 19b, 22)

                        - and I received eternal life (22b, 23b)

 

c) The illustration of marriage (7:1-6)

               i) If a partner dies the other is free to marry again

              ii) We were married to the law

             iii) We’ve died to law and now can belong to God (4)

 

2.  It’s a fight from now on (7:2-25)

That was Paul’s experience - both before and after conversion

 

a) We struggle with right and wrong

               i) God’s law helps us recognise evil (7-12)

              ii) God’s law helps us recognise the sinfulness of evil (13)

             iii) The struggle with my sinful nature keeps going on (14-16)

 

b) The victory comes through Jesus Christ (25)
